Omega 3 Health Benefits: The Best Way to a Healthy Heart

Studies have shown that consuming large amounts of fish oil is very effective at putting certain heart diseases at bay. According to research, fish oil is also known to reduce the effects of aging, reduce the symptoms of osteoporosis, helps prevent prostate cancer, boost brain power and memory, and even protect you from pollution! All of those benefits are thanks to that little key ingredient in fish oil known as Omega-3.

So we've all heard about Omega 3 health benefits and how it's such a miracle worker when it comes to cleaning arteries, and the best thing around at preventing cardiovascular diseases. But what is Omega-3? Well, to put it simply, Omega-3 is a type of fatty acid mostly found in fish oil, which in turn is produced in fish tissue, that helps prevent inflammation, among other things.

According to a new study conducted by the Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, American men are three times more likely to have coronary heart failure than Japanese men, who are found to have higher levels of omega-3 than their American counterparts. The Researchers at Pitt University worked with scientists in Japan, Philadelphia and Hawaii to study 300 men over the course of five years, tracking factors affecting cardiovascular health such as cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, high blood pressure, diabetes rate and cholesterol in the blood. After accounting for these risk factors, it was revealed that men from the United States had "three times the incidence of coronary artery calcification" compared to the Japanese men. The researchers have found that the Japanese have 100% more Omega-3 fatty acids in their blood compared to American men.

Lead author of the journal, Akira Sekikawa, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of epidemiology at Pitt Public Health, stated that the study has had mixed results, wherein it is found that the level of marine-derived omega-3 consumed must be higher than what was previously thought is needed, as opposed to previous research done on the subject.

Marine-derived omega-3 fatty acids are found in krill, squid and fish, particularly oily fish. Such fatty acids can reduce inflammation and the formation of fatty plaques in arteries.

The study has found that Japanese men eat at least 100 grams' worth of fish, the best source for Omega-3, daily, as opposed to Americans, who only consume 7 to 13 grams of fish a day, which is about one serving of fish per week.
Sekikawa also stressed that the vast difference in the occurrence of heart disease and omega-3 levels is not due to hereditary factors, as it is also found out that Japanese-Americans actually have higher levels of coronary calcification compared to the rest of U.S. population.

Though it is not encouraged to start consuming vast amounts of fish, as it may contain various contaminants, such as mercury, in their flesh, the findings indicate that it is worthwhile to take another look at the effect of marine-derived omega-3 fatty acids on heart disease, particularly when consumed at higher rates than previously investigated.
